Introduction to a Biochemistry Major

Hi, my name is Sarah and I was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. I actually transferred to OU this semester and couldn’t be more excited!!I am a Biochemistry major with a career goal of becoming a physician. I am typically always studying and doing school most days but I do love to do a number of different things when I have free time. I personally love to stay active. I love the gym and make sure to make time to exercise, I also love to play a number of different sports. I am a black belt in Taekwondo and have been doing it for 10+ years now which allowed me to compete in tournaments such as the US Open and the Junior Olympics all around the country. I also played soccer for a few years which I really enjoyed. When I am not doing school, I am most likely selling real estate. I absolutely love my job as a real estate agent and all the amazing people I meet and have the opportunity to serve. Other than school, work and exercise I love to eat! I enjoy trying new restaurants around town but of course I have my favorite foods. My top favorite foods consist of pasta or pizza. Anytime I go out to eat I know I can’t go wrong getting pizza or pasta. Specifically I love chicken Alfredo pasta, chicken parmesan, or white sauce pizza. A few of my favorite restaurants are Birra Birra, Firebirds, Taco Bell, and Qdoba. I don’t really watch movies, I am more of a TV person and I have been recently binge watching the real housewives shows. If I had an extra day for fun I would honestly love to go on a one day vacation to somewhere tropical and spend time at the beach. I’m not sure if it would be possible considering we are experiencing a pandemic but a girl can dream!

  1. Hi Sarah! I love to stay active too! I feel a little socially anxious at the gym but some things I like to do consist of hiking, biking, and swimming. Before college I had been a competitive swimmer for over 10 years, so I just always wanna do fun activities to stay active. And I feel you so much on the vacation thing. I would do anything to be at the beach or somewhere tropical and enjoy the sun on my skin.

  2. Hi Sarah! I am also going down the medical path and hope to one day become either a dermatologist or an anesthesiologist! I wish I could say I love the gym as much as you but it gets hard for me to actually get there. Once I got back to campus I forced myself to get a membership at crunch so I am trying to stay more active. I am also a big pizza girl and I have found this amazing place in OKC that I love that you should definitely check out! It's called Halls Kitchen. Their pizza is to die for and they have a super cute rooftop patio!

  3. Hi Sarah! I think it's so cool that you're a black belt! I've always wanted to try martial arts, but I don't know where to start. I'm also a pizza/pasta enthusiast, but I live in Tulsa and there aren't many good Italian restaurants here — although there's plenty of pizza. I quite like Marcos. Anyway, I wish you well in your academic career. I am also an OU transfer student, so I think you'll like it here!

  4. Hi Sarah! WOW! That is incredible that you competed in the Junior Olympics and the US Open. That is definitely an experience I bet you will never forget. I have never heard of Birra Birra or Firebirds, but I am intrigued now and think I will find one and try it out. Anyway I hope you enjoy this class and have a safe and wonderful semester!

  5. Hi Sarah! Welcome to OU :)
You sound like a super talented athlete and I bet those experiences were so cool. I also love the Real Housewives- the whole franchise. I could watch it all day everyday and be fine. I love good drama, especially when it has nothing to do with me! I hope you enjoy this class and look forward to reading some more of your posts!

  6. Hi Sarah! I transferred in a few semesters ago myself, so welcome! I hope you enjoy your time at OU! How incredible to have the experience of going to those competitions - that must have been a really amazing journey. We are also huge fans of pizza with white sauce in this house. I think my favorite topping combo so far has been chicken and spinach. Spinach on pizza is definitely not everyone's idea of a good time though! I hope you enjoy the rest of your semester.

  7. Hi Sarah! I also LOVE to eat! its probably one of my biggest hobbies. I love to try new things, but like you, I can never go wrong with some pasta! With the pandemic and not being able to leave the house much, I feel like I mostly just do school work all day as well. Hopefully the pandemic will ease and I will be able to do something other than school and you will get that tropical vacation!

  8. Hi Sarah! You picked a great online class to take in your first semester here at OU, so it seems like you've got it all figured out! Wow, I am impressed that you already work as a real estate agent before even graduating college - I have no idea how any of that works! And that you know real estate but at the same time you are a biochem major; that is such a wide range of experience! Good luck this semester!

  9. Hey Sarah! I think its great that you are able to do so many thing- medicine, real estate, foodie, and more! Wow! I think it is so important to make time to stay active, and its one of the things that I have been thinking a lot about recently- if I am not happy and healthy, I won't be able to do the other things in my life nearly as well. A super important mindset for a future physician!

  10. That is so cool about doing Taekwondo, Sarah! I don't know anything about Korean martial arts, but I do love Korean food; it is one of my all-time favorites. I used to live in California and there were so many good Korean restaurants.
And someday we'll get to start traveling again... it's so strange thinking about this being one year of the pandemic now (and the third pandemic semester: incredible!), but when we get to travel again, it will all seem like a wonderful adventure! And if they keep vaccinating thousands of people at a time like IMMY Lab did in Norman this week, maybe we'll be traveling and having wonderful travel adventures again soon.

  11. Hi Sarah! Welcome to OU :) That's awesome that you are able to stay active, I have been having the hardest time with that recently and so I really respect anyone who is able to stay on top of that! I love Italian food as well! There are a couple of really good places in this area, I've heard good things about Victoria's, but have not yet gone. I have also heard really good things about Hall's Pizza in OKC! I hope this semester goes well for you and you're enjoying the class :))

  12. Hi Sarah! Wow, the amount of things you listed yourself involved in is really amazing and inspiring! I have been contemplating for awhile doing Taekwondo or another type of martial arts, and I think it is so cool how you are a black belt and have competed in such big events! I also find it cool how you are a biochem pre-med (I assume) major, and yet you're also a real estate agent! I don't know how you find time to do all of those things, but it sounds like you are doing great! Welcome to OU :)

  13. Hey Sarah! I went to Edmond Santa Fe, where did you go to highschool? I actually really enjoy going to gym as well. That is really cool that you are a black belt and have competed at the US open and Junior Olympics for Taekwondo. I really like pizza too, where's your favorite white sauce pizza spot? Nice to meet you, welcome to OU!

  14. Hi Sarah! It sounds like you've got a lot of very active hobbies, and that's super great. I hope you're holding up well, since the pandemic has probably made a lot of those hobbies inaccessible. It's been a really rough year. I'm in complete agreement on the favorite foods front: pizza and pasta are the best. Do you have a favorite pizza place in Norman? Hideaway is pretty popular, but I'm a huge fan of The Pizza Shop (especially the calzones.) Best of luck with the biochemistry, it's a tough-but-rewarding major.

  15. Hi Sarah!
I'm also a biochemistry major! I wonder if we have any classes together. What specialty are your hoping to go into for your career as a physician? I am not super familiar with all of the options out there, so I would love to hear about your interests and what there is in general. are you considering continuing your real estate job until you become a physician part of full time? It is so cool how well-rounded you are in your interests. Biochemistry, real estate, Taekwondo. Just wow. Also, I am right there with you. I would love to go to the beach to relax and leave all of the stress behind.

  16. Hey Sarah!
Whew! Biochem major! I took intro to Biochemistry and it was so hard but SO cool to learn about the intricate reactions and systems functioning in the body. I also love to stay active, but I am not as active as you holy cow! What an awesome experience to be involved in US open and Junior Olympics, I can't even imagine your mad skills!

  17. Hey Sarah!

It is so cool how are you have a black belt in Taekwondo and have been competing in tournaments such as the U.S. Open in the Junior Olympics. I love to try new foods as well. My sister and I have this list of all the restaurants we want to try, however, due to the pandemic, lots of them have closed down. Pizza was one of my favorite foods. I just found out I am gluten intolerant, so now I cannot eat pizza or anything with wheat in it. So that is a bummer. I am more into television shows as well. Currently, I am binge watching Criminal Minds and am on season 3.

  18. Hi Sarah!
Wow! You really seem to stay active even when you seem quite busy! Good for you! I also love to stay active and made time for exercising each day. It is really cool that you have a black belt! I used to want to be an MMA fighter, but gave up on that dream a long time ago. It is also very impressive that you work as a real estate agent while still attending school. Work can be so stressful when you also have school work. I am also a big fan of food, and I am Italian so pizza and pasta are right up my alley as well. I LOVE margarita pizza can caprese salad more than anything, and honestly Volare here and Norman does a good job.

  19. Hi Sarah! I’m also from Edmond, Oklahoma. What a small world! I’ve heard how demanding and difficult biochemistry is, but it’s such a fascinating subject, so I definitely understand why you’re always studying. I’ve also gotten in the habit of keeping active, and it’s really helpful to clear the mind. Your taekwondo accomplishments are really impressive, and it’s really cool that you sell real estate!

  20. Hi Sarah!

I'm sure that major is really tough but also super interesting! I used to play soccer when I was younger and did it almost year round until my sophomore year of high school! I got kind of burnt out on it and I'm still kind of sad to not be playing it anymore. Also I LOVE Taco Bell. Do you like the potatoes there? I literally didn't go when they got rid of them and now that they're back I feel whole again. I hope you're having a great semester so far!

  21. Hi Sarah,

I love to stay active as well, whether it is just going outside on a walk, or playing different sports when I get the chance. I have played lacrosse, baseball, football, soccer, and have really enjoyed each and everyone. I think it is really cool that you do taekwondo! It must be such a great workout, especially since you have been doing it for so long. I also have always wanted to get into real-estate because it is such a good field to get into. Good luck with everything!

  22. Hello Sarah, it’s nice to meet you! It’s so cool that you are a black belt in Taekwondo. My brother is a black belt, but he never got into the competition side of things. I also love to eat, but my favorite foods are usually what I cook at home. I’ve never heard of the restaurant Birra Birra, but I might have to try it now!

  25. Hi Sarah,
You seem like you have an incredibly interesting life so far! One of my friends are currently looking into real estate because it's what his dad does, and there is some serious money to be made in the business! About your major, one of my life goals is to become a physician as well. It's been something I've wanted for as long as I can remember! Good luck with the rest of your semester and future, Sarah.

  26. Hello Sarah!
Hey I'm a transfer student as well so I hope your first semester is going smoothly and you're getting settled with everything OU. Pumped for a return to campus? It's quite a sight seeing the hustle and bustle of campus at 10:20am! Our hobbies sound similar haha, but I've never done any combat sport. That's amazing that you're still kickin' it! Good luck on finals and if you're ever bored this summer check out Sam Noble, Fred Jones, or the history of science collection! All are pretty neat!
